In 2014, the International Space Station (ISS) took on some unusual passengers: eight groups of ants, which were observed trying to perform searches under microgravity conditions. The goal? To learn more about how these tiny creatures search an area collectively and how they adapt to changing conditions —without any centralized control over the effort.

ant-space-search

The hope, according to researchers behind the study, is that one day such knowledge could be applied in areas such as robotics, where autonomous search-and-rescue robots might be able to search more thoroughly using better algorithms.
The results of the ISS observations, led by Stanford University biologist Deborah M. Gordon, have just been published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution.
The study used as its test subject the familiar pavement ant (Tetramorium caespitum). As the video below — created to show students how to recreate the experiment — demonstrates, a special habitat housed the ants.
A small chamber served as the nest area. When researchers wanted to test the ants' search behavior, they released a gate that allowed them into a small search enclosure. In smaller spaces, according to Gordon, the ants can "afford" to search more thoroughly. They know they are in a small space because "ant density" is high and they keep bumping into each other.
When the researchers wanted to observe the ants searching a less crowded, bigger space, they opened another gate to make the search area that much wider. In wider spaces, ants tend to understand they have to stretch out and use straighter search paths to maximize coverage.
The results? The team learned that even in microgravity, where they kept losing hold of the walls as well as their sense of how much space needed to be searched, the ants were still able to search collectively — albeit differently than they would on Earth. And they showed "remarkable" skill at regaining contact with the container's surface.
Next Gordon hopes to learn how different species of ant perform in the same experiment. To that end, she has set up a lesson plan that shows students how to do just that.
As the paper's author's wrote: "By repeating this experiment on Earth with different species of ants, we are likely to discover many new distributed algorithms for collective search, and to learn about how evolution has shaped collective behavior in response to local conditions."

Our world is filled to brim with mysterious, bizarre and still-to-be-explored places. Some of the sights on this planet seem like they come straight out of a science fiction movie! How many of these amazing wonders have you heard of or seen before?

1. The Frozen Bubbles of Abraham Lake

Have you ever seen anything like this?! Located under the surface of Abraham Lake in Alberta, Canada there is a beautiful and rare phenomenon happening.  This crazy sight is created by methane gas coming from from under the lake and getting frozen as it comes to the top.
Methane gas is created when plant material and animals in the lake sink to the bottom and start to get broken down by the bacteria. It breaks down all the organic matter and decomposes the body and releases the gas.
This happens all the time, except for the density of the ice is too great for the gas to escape so it creates a beautiful piece of art instead!
2. The Volcanic Lightning of Iceland

This display of lightning in Iceland is known as a “dirty thunderstorm.”
It looks like a massive explosion just happened – except from mother nature! This crazy cloud happens when fragments of rock, like ash, collide with ice while in a volcanic cloud. As the cloud plumes upward, the static in the higher parts of the atmosphere create a powerful charge for lightning to be created.  This is a place you would never want to be caught in the middle of!

3. The Massive Crystals of Naica, Mexico

This is a unreal cave that so many crystal lovers would die to visit! This cave is called Mexico’s Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals) and is home to the largest natural crystal formations, ever. No where on the planet have bigger crystals been found!
This cave provides the perfect environment for these crystals to thrive. The inside of the cave is a staggering 136 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees Celsius). That’s almost 30 degrees hotter than a hot day outside! This is how these crystals grew to be so amazingly massive!

4. The Pink Lake “Hillier” of Australia

This is an interesting one. What makes the water in this specific lake pink? It’s a question that still doesn’t have a definite answer. So far, the closest thing scientists can come up with is it’s immensely high levels of salt water. It’s said to be 10 times saltier than the ocean itself; which is already so salty!
There is a micro-algae called Dunaliella Salina that thrives off this saltiness. This kind of algae produces pigment compounds that absorb light the same way Beta Carotene does. That’s what creates the orange color in carrots and the purple in some cabbages. It’s a safe bet that THAT is what’s creating this brilliant pink hue!

5. The Reflective Salt Flats of Bolivia

This is the perfect place to take the most amazing pictures. Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, measuring in at a grand total of 10,582 square kilometers or 4,086 square miles.
Located in the southwest of Bolivia, these dream-like salt flats are results of the transformation of a few prehistoric lakes. Over eons, they have left a water salted crust over the flat. The reflection it creates looks like something straight out of a dream world.

6. Spiderweb Cocooned Trees in Pakistan

Do you find these creepy or cool? In the village of Sindh, Pakistan, this is nothing new. These trees are covered in spiderwebs that are home to more than just a couple little spiders.
Because of a massive flooding in 2010, millions of spiders were forced to seek shelter in the tops of trees. Over the years, they have produced think, intricate webs that look like a strange art installation.  How do these trees make you feel?

7. The Shimmering Shores of Vaadhoo Maldives

Ever wanted to go to the most romantic place ever? This just might be it! This is the shore of Vaadhoo in Maldives, a tiny island off of Sri Lanka. Have you ever seen anything like this before?! This brilliant light show is the result of tiny marine microbes called phytoplankton washing up on the sand. In the day time, these plankton are shades of red and brown, but by night; they become something completely otherworldly.

There is a lot of kinds of phytoplankton that have what’s called ‘bio-luminescence’. This is actually a defense mechanism to scare away potential predators. When they are agitated they let off their glow for the world to see.

INTRODUCTION

Lassi, as such has very good nutritional value. Lassi is considered to be even better than milk. The lassi with a dose of Indian herbal ingredients will help cure many health problems, if any before they make the body sick. This drink is highly beneficial in the protection of heart and brain by maintaining healthy blood pressure and circulation. The herbs to be consumed on daily basis through the medium of butter milk are well known to every Indian and used in the Indian kitchen in some form or the other.

In Dharmic religions, yogurt sweetened with honey is used while performing religious rituals. Less common is lassi served with milk and topped with a thin layer of clotted cream. Lassis are enjoyed chilled as a hot-weather refreshment, mostly taken with lunch. With a little turmeric powder mixed in, it is also used as a folk remedy for gastroenteritis.

One famous saying goes thus: what "amrita" is to the gods, buttermilk is to human beings. Acknowledging its immense therapeutic and nutritional value, it has been mentioned as the best among all milk products.

Diarrhoea and dysentery - Buttermilk has been used in gastrointestinal upsets since time immemorial as it helps in both acute and chronic conditions where the patient passes watery or semi-solid stool. Mixing of half teaspoonful of dry ginger powder in a glass of buttermilk adds to its digestive and carminative properties. Emaciated patients suffering from chronic sprue can also take buttermilk preferably before noon. The famous classic ayurvedic medicine "takrarishta" in which buttermilk is the chief ingredient is also helpful in such conditions.

Piles and intestinal worms - Those suffering from first degree piles of a bleeding or non-bleeding nature get symptomatic relief by the use of buttermilk. For this purpose one to two gm simple powder of "hararh" can be taken twice daily with a glass of buttermilk for some time. Similarly, to cure stubborn intestinal worm problem, one gm powder of seeds of "vayvding", which are commonly available at the pansari shop, can be safely used for a few days.

Liver diseases - In jaundice and alcoholic liver diseases regular use of "takram" immensely helps the patient to regain normal appetite and digestion. For faster relief, one gm powder of any of the proven liver protective herbs like bhringraj, chiraita or kalmegh can be taken along with buttermilk.

Buttermilk recipe - To make an all season nutritive drink of buttermilk, take half a cup of home-made curd. Blend it slowly for a few minutes. Slowly add one glass of cold water and blend it again. After discarding the fatty foam appearing on the top, add half teaspoonful of cumin powder, a few leaves of mint, and a pinch of rock salt (table salt can be a substitute). Blend just enough to mix the spices evenly and serve at room temperature.

Caution- Buttermilk should not be used during the flare-up phase of rheumatoid arthritis, in severe constipation, asthmatic conditions and following immediate exposure to heat. After taking into consideration the seasonal specifications and individual suitability, one can, for better results, use appropriate additives to it.

  INGREDIENTS HERBAL LASSI PROCEDURE   -

1) Black Pepper Sugar Powder : This powder is made of sugar and black pepper. It is to be prepared by taking 15 spoons of sugar and 150 black pepper seeds into in a small mixy container. Grind the mixure well to make it a fine powder and keep the powder into a bottle for daily use in lassi. This entire pepper sugar powder is to be used for about one month @ half a tea spoon per day in the lassi. This means that we are making sure to eat at least 5 black pepper seeds every day.

Diabetic patients can avoid use of sugar by taking appropriate quantity of fresh pepper powder instead of pepper seeds and sugar.

(2) Ginger Garlic Paste : This paste is made of ginger and garlic. Take 100 gms of ginger and 100 gms of garlic. Remove the covered layers from both ginger and garlic cloves and clean them well. Cut the ginger into small pieces and put the same into a small mixy container along with cleaned galic cloves. Grind them well in the mixy container to make it a fine paste. One spoon of rock salt can be added to this paste while grinding to increasing the taste of lassi and also to preserve it for longer times. Pack this paste into a bottle and store it in a fridge. Use this ready made paste @ one spoon per day in the lassi. This will ensure you to consume about 3 - 4 cloves of garlic along with a half a spoon of ginger per day.

Those who are on fasting may like to use only ginger paste without garlic or go for dried ginger powder.

(3) Honey : Purchase 1 liter of branded pure organic honey from any reputed shop which do not contain any crystal sugar or gaggery. Add one spoon of honey to one glass of butter milk. This will help you to consume honey in therapatic quantities.

(4) Lassi : Take 1 small cup of fresh sweet curd and 3 small cups of plain filtered water into a steel container and stir them well with the help of traditionally used Indian wooden stirrer till it becomes a homogeneous liquid.

MARKET POTENTIAL

Herbal Probiotic lassi
SMC's head of dairy microbiology , Dr. J B Prjapati, said process patents for the manufacture of a herbal probiotic 'lassi' -  a fermented Indian milk product -had been applied for using two strains.
" we are testing the lassi to check its potential in reducing cholesterol levels in humans," Dr. Prjapati said.
The AAU said  it had also undertaken a three year long project with a medical college in Gujarat to check how the indigenous pro biotic cultures can help improve immunity levels among people above 60 years of age .
The university also said it was collaborating with Sweden's Lund university for further research and trials.
Ever more consumers are opting for products with natural ingredients, a genuine taste experience and added functional benefits. To meet these needs, natural extracts from herbs Probiotic lassi, are playing an increasingly important role.

April 2, 2008 *

Day 93.

I had two pieces of rock hard bread leftover from when I made bread last week.

Since I worked oh-so-hard on the bread (that was sarcasm. could you tell?)

I hated to throw any of it away. We had a loaf of Trader Joe's brown rice bread in the fridge, so I decided to combine the bread and make a yummy bread pudding.

Oh! And I used a crockpot.

The

I always wanted a cool physics teacher. You know, one of those teachers who does fun experiments in a futile attempt to get his students to think science is cool.

In high school, my physics teacher was the opposite of cool. He was a cruel, ruthless man, and his name — I’m 100 percent not joking — was Mr. Hook (he did not have one for a hand).
But the physics teacher in this video makes Mr. Hook look like Robin Williams in the “Dead Poets Society” (because John Keating never hit one of his students with an axe).
This kid is just lucky the teacher wasn’t using the blade side to break the cinderblock. Apparently there can be a silver lining to getting smashed with an axe in the testicles.
