I made a whole chicken yesterday in the slow cooker, and it turned out really well. We had some tomatoes that needed to get used up before they turned into pasta sauce, and I threw them on top of the bird while it slow-cooked. I loved the end result: a moist, flavorful chicken with gooey packed-with-flavor tomatoes. For an added bonus, you can save the crock drippings to make steamed rice.

Maybe it’s the billionaire(s) in the news lately, but for some reason I decided to take one of America’s most frugal meals, franks and beans, and give it a high-end makeover. Besides, all the other classic comfort foods have been fancified, hipsterized, and/or molecular gastronomized; so I figured I would take this one down. And by down, I mean up.

Usually, franks and beans is made by opening up a couple cans of baked beans, and heating it up with some sliced hotdogs. Not exactly something you’d serve to visiting dignitaries. However, by adding some fresh veggies, plain beans, and high-quality beef hot dogs, we can achieve something much healthier, equally delicious, and every bit as comforting.

So, how much more will it cost you to make this usually cheap dish, using these upscale ingredients? It’s tempting to say, if you have to ask, you can’t afford it, but that’s not the case. Sure, the Kobe hotdogs will cost you a couple extra dollars, but the rest of the dish is still quite inexpensive. I really do hope you give this a try soon. Enjoy!


Ingredients for 4 portions Franks & Beans:
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 diced yellow onion
1 diced poblano or other green pepper
2 tbsp minced fresh cayenne pepper, or other hot red pepper
1 rib celery, diced
1 pound hot dogs, sliced (literally any other sausage will work here)
2 (15-oz) cans cannellini beans, drained, rinsed
1 tbsp light brown sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 1/2 cup chicken broth, or as needed
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1/4 cup sliced green onions
- serve with buttered toast and champagne

Based on the YouTube comments appearing under the newly posted spring rolls video, lots of people missed the part about this not trying to be a specific recipe, but simply a demo featuring the magic that is damp, rice paper wrappers.

Don’t get me wrong; I love the “authentic” spring rolls I so often order at my friendly, neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant. Loaded with sweet shrimp, and bursting with vermicelli noodles, they are among the most delicious things ever invented.

However, I do reserve the right to soak rice paper wrappers in water, and… (I hope you’re sitting down for this) ...not make those! What you see here is just what I had on hand that day, and the next time I do a batch of these, who the heck knows what they’ll encase. If I have a point, that’s it.

Speaking of soaking in water, many commenters suggested that I dunk these in warm water for just a few seconds to hydrate, instead of the longer dip in cold water. I’ve tried both methods, and had more issues with the warmer/faster approach. They seemed to get too rubbery, too fast, which I found made the rolling harder.

Anyway, to each his own, and that goes for water temperature, filling ingredients, and dipping sauce. By the way, there are no ingredient amounts below, since that’s up to you entirely. You should be able to get “rice paper wrappers” at any large grocery store with an Asian food section, but if not, they’re easily found online. I hope you give these, or something similar, a try soon. Enjoy!

next- iPhone's- camera-new-future

The camera on the next iPhone will have a bigger sensor that can take in more light, and a lens that's designed to work with that improved sensor.
This means we can expect the iPhone 6S to capture higher-quality photos than the iPhone 6.
Apple is currently ordering suppliers to produce five-element lenses for the iPhone 6S that are designed to work with 12-megapixel camera sensors, a person within Apple's supply chain told Business Insider. These components are said to be in the mass-production stage and are on schedule, this source said.
This same person also said Apple is ordering six-element lenses for a future iPhone intended to be released after the iPhone 6S (presumably the iPhone 7).
We've been hearing for months that the iPhone 6S will come with a 12-megapixel camera, but we haven't heard much about what else to expect. Back in November, Daring Fireball blogger John Gruber said the next iPhone could come with the "biggest camera jump" we've seen in years.

The importance of 'elements'

An "element" refers to a layer of plastic that makes up a part of the whole lens in a camera. Each of these elements, or layers, actually functions as its own standalone lens. But when they're combined into one lens, they allow a camera to capture more detailed and complex information.
So a five-element lens such as the one that's in your smartphone's camera could actually be considered as five lenses crammed into one, says Rajiv Laroia, the cofounder and CTO of Light, a photography startup that's working on ways to fit cameras with multiple lenses inside smartphones. (In the iPhone, there's also a sapphire glass cover that protects this plastic lens from getting scratched.)
Since smartphone cameras are so small, the lenses for these cameras are constructed from layers of high-quality plastic rather than glass. These small plastic lenses are easier to fit into small devices and are much cheaper to produce than glass. In fact, these lenses only cost $1 to produce, according to Laroia.
Although the lens for the iPhone 6S will be made of five elements just like the one found in the current iPhone's camera, it's made of a higher specification so that it matches the new 12-megapixel sensor, this person in Apple's supply chain said.
For context, the current iPhone has an eight-megapixel sensor.

The six-element lens being considered for the iPhone 7 (or whatever it ends up being called) would only be on par with what competitors are already putting in their phones.
The OnePlus 2's camera, for example, packs a six-element lens with a 13-megapixel sensor. The Samsung Galaxy S5, which was released last year, is said to have a six-element lens as well.
Our source also mentioned that other clients typically order six-element camera lenses rather than five-element lenses.  
A six-element camera lens allows a camera to absorb more light than a five-element lens would, which results in clearer and sharper images. In order to increase a camera's aperture, which is essentially a passage that allows light to enter through the camera, you would need to add more elements to a camera's lens, says Laroia. The larger the aperture, the more light can travel through the lens to the camera's body, which in turn produces better photographs.
"If you want to collect more light, then you need more elements," he said.

Nothing is considered final until Apple reveals its next iPhone. Supply chain orders don't always reflect how final products turn out, but it does give us an idea of what Apple might be experimenting with.

You might be scoffing at me and saying, wrenches never go out of fashion as they have currently been in business for like 200 years, and no one was able to improve on them significantly. Well, read on and you’ll understand what i am talking about.
The new wrench was developed by Jon Steranka in Seattle, and it appears more or less similarly like a camera lens that adjusts the lens according to the focus. Here it adjusts itself according to the nut that needs to be fiddled with. There is also the rare luxury of a light surrounding the aperture of the wrench so that you will be able to see the nut you are trying to unscrew.

The new wrench will simplify your life in the workshop to many levels. For instance, there will be no need to shout “size 6” and “size 7” constantly to your assistant while you are unscrewing all the nuts under your car. This single wrench will be all that is needed! However, it comes with slight teething problems that Steranka hopes to overcome soon enough. It is much more expensive than those simple wrenches as well so it might take a chunk out of your wallet. But nonetheless, it is a great thing to have on your wall and the notion that simpler days are ahead!
